Casual Monday: Nike Cortez Mood

Feeling home sick, therefore, I’m rocking my trophy sneakers that remind
me of where I come from.

Growing up in Northern California, I always wanted a pair of Navy/White Nylon Nike Cortez. But, my wish list was shot down with the infamous, “they’re too expensive”. Instead, I got the white faux-leather Payless knock-off version. Can’t remember whether they were Pro-Wings or XJ-900s, but, whatever they were, I wore them with pride, for the first week only (until everyone realized they weren’t Nikes). After earning enough money, I purchased my 1st pair of black and white Nike Cortez. Then, it was blue and white. Decades later, I continue to buy the same pair, over and over, again, since I was 14 years old.

Mama said, they was my magic shoes…

As we all know, a classic never goes out of style – which is why Cortez was dubbed one of the coolest kicks in the 80’s and has made its way back into the limelight as the go-to hipster sneaker with so many new designs. I, however, love the simplicity and comfort of the shoe. That foam wedge in the heel providing extra cushioning works wonders when on the go. Especially, being that I’m one of those people who walk 100 miles per hour (that natural power walk. LOL!)… Nonetheless, earning a little street cred the old-school Cali way brings back so many memories to mind – that they’re more than just a must-have in my wardrobe. They’re a part of my roots…
